 "Very disappointed" 2010-02-14
By Larry (North Carolina)
This was my first experience with the Lavazza Brand. It will be my last experience with Lavazza also. I expect espresso beans to be dark, shiny, and flavorful and this Gran Gusto bean was none of the above. I thought I was getting a bargain, but found that you get what you pay for.

This is a medium espresso roast and does not have very much flavor which surprised me coming from LaVazza. It reminded me of a cheap Arabica coffee. I would not buy this espresso roast again.

I spent a lot of time seeking the right bean for my fully automatic espresso maker. Wanted a bean that was smooth with a chocolate finish and not oily. Top Class is that coffee. The product is also well priced.

 "Not good coffee" 2009-07-03
By M. Ippolito (Hatfield, Massachusetts United States)
I ordered this on the autoship because it was the only lavazza available at the time. I'm a true espresso drinker and I found this coffee to be not up to the lavazza standards. It has a weak flavor and flat finish. The crema is good, but that just tells us that there's a lot of robusto beans in it. To me it tastes like supermarket quality coffee. If you look on their website it doesn't even tell you what the blend is. I would not recommend buying this blend.

"It was very weak and barely drinkable in my opinion" 2010-02-25
By smiles (Burlington,Ma USA)
This was my first time with Lavazza. The coffee was weak, light, flavor was OK but not what I was expecting from an Italian coffee. With the milk (cappuccino) it was barely present as taste.

I drink cappuccinos every day and I use a very good espresso machine and I can change the type of grind, and the strength and all that. No matter what combination I used it was just barely Ok.

If I could I would have returned the coffee.

 "The Quality is Gone..." 2010-02-15
By Naughty Bynature (SF Bay Area)
Lavazza Qualita Oro (Gold Quality) USED to be better, more authentic, more robust, more pronounced, more reliable as one of the traditional Italian roasts from Italy.

In both a classic espresso, and when making a latte or a cappuccino, this label was an old reliable. I found my recent purchase to be a huge disappointment, lacking in aroma but more so, a weak, flat and downright dull cup of coffee. I do not know what has been done to lessen the quality, but I now regret not spending a few more dollars and getting something much more enjoyable, such as Illy.

Be aware that as a grocery item, Amazon will not accept a purchase such as this for returns.

Very disappointing.

Very nice roast. An aroma to die for. This is the best tasting whole bean I buy at Amazon. First time I bought it, beans looked a little dry. Nice smell, smallish amount for the price. I was skeptical. Well not any more.

These beans in a French Press are hard to beat. Smooth full flavor I just love. The price to wt. value is not that high. Well in line with others and the taste puts it above many others.

This is why I drink coffee.

"Depends on what you're looking for. Not my favorite." 2009-11-24
By Anonymous Italian
Not a bad bean, not my favorite either. The flavor is well rounded with strong herbal scents and related undertones (primarily cut grass, wild flowers) . It grinds well and brews well. It's not an overly oily bean and the resulting coffee is not as viscous as with other blends. It's a more acidic bean than I like.

I prefer the Lavazza Tierra blend, it's oilier and its aroma is less herbal and more chocolaty. It's less acidic as well.

All that being said, I tried buying Lavazza on Amazon to get the free prime shipping, but it's not worth it. I'll go back to buying my favorite beans: Danesi Classic (Kimbo Black Top is very good as well).

I looked all over town and could't find any decaf expresso. Fortunately, Amazon provided me with the Lavazza alternative, and it was a tasty and welcome experience. By T. Ribaudo (Boston, MA)
I normally drink Lavazza Rossa expresso (made in a French Press), but in attempt to cut down on my caffeine intake I have weaned my self to decaf. while other decaf coffee has given me heartburn or just tasted awful, this Lavazza hit the spot. While it is not quite as rich as the Rossa, it is still has plenty of rich chocolatey flavor, is beautifully smooth and not at all bitter. The only downside I have is the price tag and the need to buy it buy the can (rather than the vacuum packet). Its a full $3 more than I pay for the same amount of Rossa. It is by far the best decaf that I have ever drunk.

Lavazza decaf espresso was the best tasting of the 6 leading brands I tried in my Gaggia Classic machine, and this 4-pack was the least expensive per can that I found on the internet. The grind is not quite fine enough but 3 sec in a cheap non-burr grinder produced the correct degree of fineness for a mouse's tail and perfect crema.

"WORKS WELL IN DELONGHi EC155" 2010-02-12
By P. Gutierrez (Portage, MI. USA)
Bought these Lavazza Gran Crema Espresso Pods after purchasing a Delonghi EC155 Espresso Machine. This was my first dabble in homemade Espresso and I figured the pods would be easier to start with. I mainly drink Lattes/Cappuccinos so I don't know how the pure Espresso is supposed to taste, but it has a good crema. After I put the pod in the holder I give it a little tamp with the tamper that came with the machine and it works great every time. I purchased the 150-count box and actually received 172 in the box...Bonus!

By Kim Coffman

I use the Lavazza Espresso Gran Crema in a Delonghi espresso machine and it tastes wonderful. The Crema is great and rich. These did not work in my older Gaggia machine. My Delonghi has a special O ring on the inside of the holder that prevents the water from going to the side and by passing the pod. Basically any pod would do great in this machine. I recommend using only filtered water in all machines. The setiment in water can cause alot of headaches even with regular cleaning. I just signed up for a subscribtion of and save 15%, a great deal for 150 pods. The taste compares well with our local coffee shops.

"*NOT* a Dark Roast! *NOT* an Espresso Roast. More like Medium; not flavorful." 2010-01-13
By C N (San Diego)
I bought this coffee expecting a dark roast to use in my espresso machine. I know it's an italian roast but it's much more medium to light than other italian roasts I've had. The color of the beans is similar to the top of the bag (a medium brown), not oily at all (in fact, they look completely dry). Whether this is normal or not for this roast, I don't know.

All the other italian, and dark/full-bodied roasts I've had have been much darker, bordering on blackish, and have at least some oil on the bean surface.

This coffee brews extremely light as an espresso. I'd say it's nutty and a bit sweet as well. Lacks depth & complexity. It is smooth, but so is water. There are no of those darker-roast flavors (smoky, chocolate, toast, etc.) or heartiness.

If you're a fan of espresso, french roast, sumatra, and other bold/dark-roasts, this coffee is not for you. I wish I could return this.

 "Average" 2010-01-07
By Nathan Beauchamp (Oak Park, IL USA)
I expected a lot from these beans after reading some of the reviews here on Amazon. I expected a rich, flavorful espresso bean. These beans appear to be under roasted. They are very light in appearance and don't have any of the customary oil that I find thinly coating other quality coffee beans. I still gave them a try, and the resulting brew did taste better than expected, but was nothing to write home about. They do make a very nice cup of regular coffee if ground using the 'course' setting of my bur grinder. I've decided to just use them for coffee as they make a pleasing cup of moderately strong coffee if you use enough beans. I use approximately twice as many beans as I do with the 100% Kona that is my usual bean to get coffee that tastes substantial. These beans also cost half as much as the Kono beans do, so I guess that's tolerable.

I would not recommend these for Espresso. For normal coffee they're fine, but still not in any way remarkable.

 "crema yes, aroma no" 2009-12-29

Light roast, lots of crema, no aroma, little flavor. If you adjust the grind for a 25 second

extraction and increase the temperature a bit, you can get some espresso like brown substance

from these beans, but still a little thin and sour.

Customer Buzz
 "Disappointing" 2009-12-28
By A. Joseph (Woodside, CA USA)
Maybe I got a bad lot. These beans were inferior both in appearance and in the espresso brewed from them. I bought a bag in Dec 2009 and the date on the bag was Jan 2011 so I anticipated something reasonably fresh.

Upon opening the bag, the beans are below normal in size and a good number of them look like they should have been rejected.

The beans also appear to be 'under roasted' or unevenly roasted. The espresso was without the customary sweetness that I so enjoy.

I'm back to buying Sumatra or Ethiopian locally roasted.

I won't buy these again.

Disappointing taste, disappointing response by seller. Opened the 2-lb. bag of beans, and there was no aroma. Made my cappuccino & my husband's black espresso: no pleasing flavor, in fact unpleasant flavor. Tried again, to be certain. Not good! Mailed entire bag back at my expense, as no answer via phone on Friday evening & wanted to get it over and done with. Received call a few days later from a rude and insulted rep. who chastised me for returning without authorizarion. The policy is no returns on coffee. Refused me a credit or even in-house credit. I let my platinum credit card handle it, the seller has the coffee beans and my money!

"Great espresso starts with the beans" 2008-04-11
By Utah Blaine (Somewhere on Trexalon in District 268)
No need for a detailed review, these beans make great espresso. I have a Gaggia Classic espresso maker and a Krups burr grinder to grind the beans, and this trio (Lavazza Super Crema Beans + machine + grinder) makes fantastic espresso every time. The crema is perfect, there is not the slightest hint of bitterness. My only warning about these beans is that if you own an espresso maker at home, you should be real careful buying these beans as you may find yourself going crazy making espressos. These beans consistently make an espresso that is as good or better than anything I've found commercially in the US (and I'm not going to rant about the coffee beverage that Starbucks sells as espresso and puts in a paper cup). This bag of espresso beans is definitely more expensive than what you can find in the grocery store (or elsewhere), but this is a case of you get what you pay for. If you like espresso, this is money well spent.

By Wayne-o (Possession Sound)
Being a long time consumer of Lavazza Creama E Gusto which I find most enjoyable, I thought I'd give Super Creama a try.Very disapointing on flavor and fullness. For a latte I find it necessary to double the quantity in the basket and cut the milk by 80-90% so instead of a 10 oz

double, it's a single shot expresso with a dash of milk. The bean is a medium brown in color that is reflected in it's charater. Back to "Creama E Gusto"

 "Il Espresso Migliore" 2008-01-13
By James A. Nichols (Atlanta, Georgia)
I bought a high End Gaggio Espresso machine for my wife for a special occasion last year. While searching around for espresso beans I couldn't find any that reminded me of Italy. Finding the Lavazza Super Crema was the best. Especially in the 2.2lbs bag. So you know we go through a bag in 45 to 60 days. I've given up drinking regular coffee and now either go Espresso or Cafe American.

I would recommend this Espresso to anyone who would enjoy a smooth, and aromatic blend and the Crema is the best. Buon bere.

"Sour sour and then some" 2010-02-14

If you like the sour taste almost as if there is a lemon additive in your coffee... go for it! Not for me.

 "Lavazza Tierra Coffee" 2010-02-10

I tried many types of coffees, and I must admit that Lavazza Tierra is the best. Full of flavour, with some hint of sweetness and of consistent quality.

We ordered this coffee a few weeks ago and it is delicious. We like it much better than the Supercrema.

"Very similar to Supercrema, but a little better in my opinion" 2010-01-20
By Bryan C. Dickinson (Berkeley, CA)
I am still trying to find the perfect bean for making espresso. This is probably the closest I have come yet, at least to making espresso shots for lattes and cappuccinos. I have used the crema e aroma and the Supercrema. I like the Supercrema a lot, and this is very similar, but in my hands came out a little more smooth and a little less bitter. I grind with a LeLit Pl53 and brew on a Rancilio Silvia. My final verdict is that these shots are smooth enough to make milk-based drinks that need little-to no sweetener, as the shots (done properly) have very little or no bitterness. As far as drinking them as straight espresso, I would still like a little more body to each shot and maybe a little more complexity. However, as I am constantly refining my brew methods, it would not surprise me at all if I was still not reaching the full potential of these beans. Delicious!

"Not as good as Super Crema for straight espresso" 2009-12-27
By Ana Borges (Cambridge, MA USA)
My husband and I are big fans of Lavazza's Super Crema coffee, but got a bag of the Tierra blend recently while the Super Crema was out of stock. While the smell and color are wonderful, we found the Tierra 100% arabica blend to be much more bitter than our regular blend, and even after we added cream or milk to our coffee we felt unable to continue to drink it, so we gave it away after only a few brews (we are straight espresso drinkers otherwise). We have now received our regular Super Crema again and couldn't be happier.
